Jongmyo Shrine meets the following criteria from the 10 Outstanding Universal Values stipulated in the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention:
Jongmyo Shrine is a great example of a Confucian shrine that hosts the ancestral tablets of the kings and queens of the Joseon dynasty and emperors and empresses of the Korean Empire. The unique architectural style of this ritual space has been acknowledged worldwide. Along with the shrine, the royal ancestral ritual and its music during the Joseon dynasty are well-preserved in their original forms.

Criterion (iv): must be an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history
