Changdeokgung Palace Complex (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Changdeokgung Palace meets three of the following criteria from the 10 Outstanding Universal Values stipulated in the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention:
Changdeokgung Palace does not follow the prescribed standards of a typical royal palace. Instead, its buildings are laid out according to the landscape of the neighboring mountains, thus being evaluated as the pinnacle of Korean palaces. In addition, the Secret Garden contains well-preserved pavilions and ponds in each section, blending in perfectly well with nature. Changdeokgung Palace is a representative palace that keeps an atypical aesthetic in East Asian architectural history. With its value as a cultural heritage that exhibits exceptional harmony with nature and excellent layout, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 6, 1997.
